Free to a hunting home. Crockett, 3 year old 3/4 lacy 1/4 AB, never been on pigs. Comes out of working dogs. I got him as a pup and hog hunting property dried up. Sold/gave away my working dogs. I just hate seeing this one not get to work. Dad is a great catch dog and uncle is a great bay and cow dog. This is a sweet dog just had a kid and no time to work this dog. pdberg@gmail.com 972.369.2166 Located in goldthwaite, tx.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Pitt/Mastiff Temperament ?

Just got two new catch dogs. Two females 3/4 pitt and 1/4 bull mastiff abt 14 weeks old. These are my first pitts to own and I am unfamiliar with a pitts temperament. (We have labs, lacys and setters)
These two dogs are very timid and like to hide or lay prostrate when I approach them. It is surprising because they were very bold when we went to pick them up. I have had them for 5 days and they are warming up very slowly. They haven't been abused or bullied by other dogs. I haven't corrected them either, only petting, feeding etc. Is this behavior standard for the breed?
Thanks in advance.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: New Hog Doggin Show

I haven't had the dogs long, probably 2 months. If you watch the trailer, the cowboy in the black hat is my buddy's dad. The dogs were his and he wasn't hunting them as much as he would like and gave them to me. From what I understand they filmed several months ago.
The dogs had the boar caught, the crew was filming and the hunters (I guess the campbells - whoever the old man, guy, and girl are on the show) were hesitant to go in and get the hog. One of the dogs was getting torn up pretty good so my buddy's dad went it and finished the job. He seemed to think they were a joke as far as hog dogging goes. He was surprised to see his face on TV as well.
it looks like the show is abt the Campbells but they go with other guys who know something about hog hunting.

Talked to the former owner of my dogs who took the cast/crew out. He said they didn't know jack about pigs. They didn't hustle in after the dogs caught and that's why one of mine got roughed up.
The outlook for the show does not look good :/

I'm looking forward to the show. I just got into hog hunting and a buddy gave me two Lacy dogs. Cool thing is the guy who gave me my dogs is the cowboy in the black hat and the Lacys you (briefly) see in the show trailer are my dogs!!
My dog got torn up pretty good while filming the show, I wonder if they'll show it.

how are those lacy`s worken as far as a catch dog?
I have taken them out a couple times but have not been able to get them on any hogs (my fault not theirs). Per my friend ,their previous owner, they have been great catch dogs. I am going out tonight to a place that should have hogs so I hope I get to see them in action. One is a full lacy and one is 1/3 American Bulldog. The full lacy has a lot of battle damage as they say he is very gritty. Just got a third lacy pup yesterday that will be a bay dog. I have had a few half bmc half english pointers who all had a lot of drive and were gritty. Some hunted awesome and quatered feilds with great heat tolerance. Some also pointed at hogs instead of bay until the hog moved None the less they were all ok dogs you could catch pigs with I am taking my Setters along this evening and we'll see how they do. I hope they do well because they have great noses and they can run full throttle forever. I am going to guess that they will bay instead of point as they haven't been on birds in a while. Should be fun!

That's kind of what I was thinking. Put a hog on the other side of the fence and watch what happens, then put them together. I was thinking about a good size hog but nothing that overpower the dogs if they did decide to catch.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Trained a bird dog to be a hog dog?

I have two 3 year old English Setters. Dogs were trained on Pheasant and Chukar. Moved from Denver so I don't have access to any game birds and quail are pretty scarce in my area. I recently acquired two Lacys that are catch dogs. I was wanting to give my setters a job and use them to be at least bay dogs, however, I feel they will end up catching as well. They are driven hunters and can be vocal.
Has anyone ever transitioned a bird dog to a hog dog? How did/would you train the dogs to bay?
Thanks in advance.

Chris I used Nemex 2 that you get at TSC! I think its about 16 bucks and should do the whole litter at least 3 times. I started the pups and mom at 3 weeks then give them all another dose at 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 weeks. Its easy and works well! All you need is a small syringe!
X2 This is the way to go.

Great! That's a lot to think about. Thanks! I have some guys here to hunt with and we have access to a lot of ranches. I am going to jump in with them and see how it goes. They hunt on horses with Lacy's so I will have to see if I can get in with some other guys that run other breeds.
Can anyone vouch for a reputable breeder or started/experienced dog listed in the classifieds?
Thanks again

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / New to hog dogs

Hello, my name is Patrick and I live in central Texas. I'm 32 and married. No kids but have 4 dogs, 2 labs and 2 English setters. I train and sell hunting labs as a hobby but with all the hogs around me I'd like to get into hunting hogs with dogs. I am buying a Lacy dog(1/16 pit) in about 6 weeks and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I get dogs, gear, etc. I will have a chance to hunt with a guy here locally but I wanted to do my research on hunting philosophies and training methods.
What tips would you give a guy starting out? How many dogs would you recommend and what type of dog? I know I want my own catch dog. Any threads already devoted to this topic? Any websites you recommend? I've searched but haven't really found anything concise or too helpful.
Thanks in advance
