Lily believed in making dogs, not breeding. If you were able to track down very distant relatives of his dogs you probably wouldnt have much but a conversation piece... unless you put in the kind of dog time Lily did.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: How to get range on a dog?

I've been raising and hunting the dogs I raise for a pretty long time. Someone posted the video below on this site a while back, and I have to admit had I seen this years ago I could have saved myself a lot of frustration. For the most part, I agree 100% with what this guy says. My best advice for someone trying to get a dog to hunt deep is get a pup bred that way and just don't screw it up. Easy to shorten a dogs natural range...sometimes without even realizing what your doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGkdlpIxWbYThat is my video. Range can be bred in, but even then that doesnt make it automatic. I can take 10 dogs that I get at 4 months old and if they have never been messed with I can usually get 8 of them to go long 1000+ yds by 1 year old by themselves. Dogs naturally want to hunt, too often we mess them up

The site belongs to Xtreme Hog hunter magazine, which is out of business. I figured they would keep baydog.com going but it doesnt look like it

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dog horn

cody that ought to make a good one. Personally i dont think you need to go as far as blowing the horn and using the rope like you might when you teach them their name. Just blow it around the house and at feeding and they are smart enough to link that sound to you. As far as driving to get a dog, you got to be dang careful doing that. Ive seen dogs get trained to sit down and wait for ole joe to come get me. Every once in a while when the situation dictates you do it, thats fine but id make sure and watch out for a habit forming in the dog.

My dogs range about 1/2 to a mile, i like it that way, where i hunt there arent many hogs and a dog needs to get out there and cover a lot of ground. I prefer a medium dog - 600-900 yds but they usually start going deeoer and deeper

if you pay for dogs, at this point in your hog hunting education, youre likely going to get screwed. and ,you need to go either loose or rough, not mixed like you said before. hunt with a lot of guys. Work. Make a hand, and if you show respect, loyalty, and you are dependable $1000 dogs will get thrown your way. You CANT buy your way into hog hunting... you CAN spend a ton of money, but..... your better off going to the casino.

I start them as soon as they know how to bay a little, and can keep up with the big dogs. If they start babbling telling the other dogs to wait up then its back to the kennel for a bit. Usually around 9-12 months seems about the average for hunting. Even then its not all night, usually just one good cast, maybe 2-3 miles, 3 - 4 hours.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Walk hunting

Generally when people say they walk hunt it is less about their mode of transportation and more about the way the dogs hunt, close by you as you walk. Hunting long range dogs on foot i would not call walk hunting.

I am all for discussion that pushes people to think... no good will come from all the chest beating. Numbers? I don't know numbers, never cared to tally. I don't care to compete with other hunters, the competition is between my brain, dogs and hogs. Hog hunting is challenging enough without dealing with all the tough guys. So NO, i wont throw out a number, but i will keep on hunting and working dogs despite what is posted on the internet.
