THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / Patterdale

I hope none of you have to go through what happened to us yesterday, my daughter's (Kloie 3yrs old) mini hog dog as she called him was playing in the yard caught wind of the hogs at our baypen and met the wrong end of a vehicle. He was her little buddy and it's very difficult to explain that your baby girl. She is in good spirits for the most part but now she is asking if we can get her another mini hog dog so she can help train it and it be her size. We're looking for another pat 6-8 months or younger will be an inside dog and trained for hunting/baypen work with her as the primary handler I and her mother of course will be helping her. If anyone has a lead on a patterdale pup for my daughter please contact me. She picked him out and negotiated the price with Mr. Alan Scott at uncle earls this year and he was already a big part of everyone's day to day activities here. Thank you for any help and good hunting. Txt is best for contact or call after 5 3185781366 or 3185788375 Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Yea there are some good spots in Cotton Valley, I think Shane has gotten out last I heard he used to have some good dogs from what I've heard never got to make a run with him but my cousin was with him when his jeep dog got killed on the wma a couple years ago. I've got one spot to hunt down that way and the guy calls when they're in there and that's been a while.

Who'd you hunt with up this way, there are a good number of hogs and some good ones in the area for sure but also alot of us hunting them we all try and steer clear of each others spots and be respectful as a whole lot of good hunting turkey season had a big damper on the spots I can run now and the last few places we been hitting have hogs but dang they are starting to turn into some track stars. Ive gotten very accustomed to catching dang near every hunt and that's just not happening lately. Usually expecting multiple hogs and getting lucky to shut down one so it's definitely getting to me

One of the techniques I'm gonna try is getting my hands on a good boar if I can't catch one pretty soon and send them to bay school on top of dropping just one at a time and the other tips and tricks you guys have mentioned. Figure if I can teach them to bay a little better with a good hog and not a easily overpowered one it can't do anything but help. Heard from one of the old timers around here if you want to catch good hogs train with good hogs you want to catch sows an babies then train with them, he alway had one bad sob in his baypen...

I always hear guys say it's hard to catch in those planted pines what makes it so hard vs thick briars yopoons black lokus blood weed cane and so on. Hogs run hard every where I never hunted in pine rows maybe I am missing something
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Lotta the planted pines when they get 3-7 year range are bad rough you usually cannot walk through them at all usually have to lay down or attempt to back through them it's taken 30 minutes to get 100 yards before in some of them the briars go from your feet to over head high and your lucky to find a rabbit trail. Once they get past that age the undergrowth starts to get smothered out and die off and it's not nearly as bad. Dang hogs will run circles in it get a little ahead of a dog and just wait dog finally gets close they'll just go a little farther. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Agreed I've been outrun plenty had dry runs etc. just like everyone else I don't get to bent out of shape over it, but when I get to see the hogs and know that a dogs 10 yds behind him burning that track like dang it and not getting it finished is just eatin me up! I gotta figure out what's going on and take some steps to try and get it corrected whatever that may be I agree with the dogs needing to actually work the hog shut em down and start working them. I'm leaning more towards the bay breaker or as a group they are getting rough but not committing and staying caught causing them to break. So on top of not catching the hogs I'm getting on I'm now one of the guys that is educating the dang things on dogs and making the problem worse. So I'm gonna see what steps I can take to make a change and get a plan together that works

Appreciate the input guys and I know it happens to all of us sooner or later but makes me feel better to hear it anyway and some of the solutions that yall have had good luck with. Gonna be trying them all to some degree or another to figure out what will work. Also need to find a bad hog for my pen was gonna try getting them to all pile on and catch deal but used a smallish easily overpowered hog for the training and it worked for one hunt and then they either forgot or met one that not all of them committed on is what I'm figuring and it kinda goofed up the whole bunch so guess I take some blame for that as well gonna get em to learn to bay a good hog and not try to catch had good luck in the past doing that one thing to find hogs which isn't the problem but controlling/baying is a completely different thing all together

try running less dogs or looser baying dogs. I'd crap if my bay dogs caught a 175 pd boar without a CD
I was shocked when we got there I didn't even send the bulldog joker started squealing figured alright we got us a little ol pig and got there and found my main strike dog locked down like a bulldog on him had to many on the ground that day puppy and I think 4 bay dogs I done got tired of the running so I was hoping to catch out on the ones we'd been chasing 60-120lb range and they came across him just added a new dog to the pack as well and she's on the rougher side but backs up as long as they stop quick. So we caught him but not my original intentions. Guess I'm gonna start using one maybe 2 dogs on the ground at a time and see what happens gonna try an find a decent hog for my baypen and get them to respect em a little better and not put as much pressure on them. Thanks for the input so far and yep I'm the first to admit it been running to many dogs at once usually 3 bay dogs and a puppy so having 4 on the grounds probably 3 to many Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

You either have to catch em when the dogs first find em or have enough bottom to run the air out of them...all this about dogs that can stop runners or shut em down I just don't buy. If they're going to run they're going to run period.
Another thing you may want see if one of your dogs is busting the bay, a bay buster never helps matters on a running hog.
I agree it's been getting worse lately I'm lookin really hard at the dogs I'm running to check for a bay breaker but harder to find that out than it sounds especially when they are 800+yds when they strike then it's off to the races. Actually saw the hog 5yds from the pipeline sucker came by like grease lightening was hoping he would come out I've started carrying my rifle on a regular basis because of this junk. I don't know if running the wind out of these jokers is possible due to how far we end up going, we're talking milesss off the properties were supposed to be on and they are 800-1200 acres on average. We have permission from surrounding land owners to get dogs and get back where we are supposed to be but as bad as they are going were getting past everyone we've talked to quick fast and in a hurry sometimes. Anyone have any words of great wisdom or dog whisper ideas, prayers even. Fellas I'm at a loss and I'm getting madder every hunt I go on. I don't know what the trick is or something but if any of you guys have some ideas I am ALL EARS! I m willing to try about anything. Started off the year catching a good many hogs and then the running started. I haven't got a problem locating the hogs dogs are doing fine in that department it's getting the stupid things bayed long enough for me to get to them. Put the dogs in the baypen on a decent boar and let em get some bay practice in and the following hunt we struck a 177lb boar and we caught him without a bulldog. Now we're back to running the fire out of em again. My male will stick for miles hunt I went on solo we ended up 8 miles from where we struck before they bayed up and that's to dang far. Any ideas or input is greatly appreciated.

Well like stated your time your money do as you like I tried this one time had one wild as all get out spent a couple weeks on the project just seeing if it was lack of socialization or whatever. Not worth the time devoted. Plenty of good dogs that will act right to spend a lot of time one one junk that may or may not come out of it. Spend the time you would on one of the others you have that show potential and save yourself the headache. Just my advice good luck with whatever you choose.

Chances are a cop standing 21st from you with a knife is not running at you with unknown intentions. That was a pretty poorly thought out response. If your walking down the street and a thug/unknown individual is coming at you from 21ft better hope your armed and can draw quick enough to shoot before your the one in the obituaries
