HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / How do you set your traps?
|
on: November 22, 2013, 11:07:46 am

Over the years our hogs are harder to get in traps. We have portable 4'x8' cattle panel traps with drop gate. I like to set them in the edge of the woods or in the brush as opposed to out in the open field.
My main question is about bait. What it better? I set both traps with corn. One trap I poured cherry jello mix, a cherry coke and a Pepsi in (basically sugary fruity stuff and whatever I found in the cabinets). It smelled so good I wanted to try it myself. The second one I was planning on boozing the corn. I originally planned on pouring a few beers in to get things going. Then I wondered If I pour something stronger in there and leave a pile outside the trap, will an inebriated pig let his guard down more and go in the trap easier?

Sportsmans Pride. I was feeding Sportmix in the black bag and it gave my male horrible gas. He comes in the house part of the time and he could clear a room. Switched to Pride and all that stopped. They seem to do real well on it. $26-28 a bag. Can't remember which.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: hogs turning feral

Under Ideal Conditions A domestic pig is born and released into the wild with other domestic pigs and no feral pigs= Generation 1 At 6 months it is able to reproduce. = Generation 2 The resulting piglet is able to reproduce at 6 months = 2 generations of pigs at a reproductive age in 1 year
Wash, Rinse, and Repeat......in 7-8 years you have 15 Generations.
I imagine you release a few domestic pigs into an area with wild pigs they would be absorbed much quicker. 3 litters per year and 3 generations per year are 2 different things.

Hehe. You sure know how to rub folks the wrong way. I enjoyed this post. Its fun to watch folks shoot themselves in the foot. I always tell my wife when she gets mad at an employee somewhere if you will be nice to them then they will be more likely to try and help you out. Act like that and they won't give a crap about you. Where I work if you are polite I'll do backflips to help you even if it goes beyond my job responsibilities. If you are a jerk I'll give you the bare minimum just to get you out of here or I'll just tell you I don't know.

Well this dog was on the local news last night. The place the dog was staying was on the way to the Florence police firing range. They picked the dog up and it was plastered all over the news how police rescued a dog that was branded. WHERE IS MY CREDIT?? haha. I've been feeding that dog and put some flea and tick stuff on it.

My dad just called and said he found a dog while he was planting. He said it has been there a few days but won't let dad catch him. Said he had a brand on him. Looked like a CY or a JY. I think he said it was brown. He said it looked similar to my brothers dog which is a Mt Cur. Thats all I know at the moment. I'll probly go check it out after work. I know you guys are about the only folks I hear of that brand dogs.

I find it humerous that someone says they have a finished dog and everyone tries tell how they are wrong. I don't care if its true or not. I got no reason to think its not.
Congrats on your dog. If it is indeed true then lets see some pics.

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dogs getting beat with a bat

A little different but what if you walk in to a man murdering your wife or even another woman. There is a baseball bat next to the door. Do you hit him once so he lets go of your wife? or do you swing till he is a grease spot on the floor? I realize it hurt your feelings. It would hurt mine too. I also realize you made things right with the owner and seem good with him but I wouldn't tempt fate. You go after his cleaning lady and he may forget your ceremonial beer and take up for his employee. As bad as it hurts I would sink into the shadows, cut your loses, and let time heal.
I try to see it from her eyes. I see 2 unknown and seemingly hostile dogs (she doesn't know they are tame pets) attacking and killing my employers prized pigs. If he knows I just sat back and watched he would likely be upset not to mention thats not how I roll. For whatever reason I'm not legal to use a gun. I'm not gonna go to jail on a gun charge over some dogs and pigs. Baseball bat works. The only difference is at my size it would likely only take 1 hit to kill the dogs but if I hit an unknown dog (especially a bulldog) with a baseball bat I'm not gonna stand there and wait to see if he is gonna fight back. I don't fight fair. Unless he heads for the hills I'm gonna put him down. It sucks but thats the way I see it. If I was on the jury thats how I'd vote.
