2  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: ivromectin wormer, cause hardening of liver? on: June 04, 2013, 08:55:01 pm
I use ivomec monthly for heart worms. My vet tells me it won't kill intestinal worms if the dog has them but a monthly dose will keep them at bay with the exception of hook worms. Which strongid will do that and that I give every 6 mo. Just be careful buying it cause usually right next to the regular ivomec is the ivomec plus which they say will kill a dog.

4  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Blood dog on: May 28, 2013, 09:22:39 pm
I know the lacy dogs are well known for their blood tracking ability. I don't think the pit blood would necessarily hurt. Prolly don't help much but don't think it would hurt. Blood tracking dogs are best if they are pets first. Unless you work on an outfitter ranch that has some really crappy shooters coming to it then the average blood tracking dog would be lucky to work a half dozen tracks a year. And half of those would be day old stuff that people have all but given up on. Either way all u can do is try it. U may be on to something. Good luck
5  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: the right price for the right dog.... on: May 20, 2013, 11:37:56 pm
I hate to say it but the dog trade business has gotten even worse. Since the beginning of time people have been ripped off on dogs but now dog peddlers have figured out that sometimes asking more for a dog will get it sold. The same POS they had listed last week for 1000 is now worth 1250? Or the price varies dependin on who is intrested.? Everybody knows somebody in their area that hunts and good dogs won't get from people like that. Not to say that 2 large bills wouldn't get you a good dog but shoot man a free dog that won't hunt for you is not good either. Good advise is buy local and shoot for a " started dog" from a local person that you know catches hogs. Jmo but a good sign that you are about to take a bath is throwing 2k down on a " finished dog" less than 5 yr old.The best advise I ever got and this goes for horses, dogs or whatever is don't let people know what u want to spend on something and don't overlook something you like just because it's cheaper. everybody loves a dog that shows a hog on the end of the track but with 2k invested you gotta love him even if he don't! LOL

I'd bet on the theory of not being used to all the people, lights, barking dogs, obnoxious sounding woman on the microphone Grin etc. Try putting the pup with an older dog that knows the drill in the puppy bay. I had one that would loop and loop by herself but with another dog she did great.

8  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Dog equipment on: May 01, 2013, 11:03:24 pm
I've priced it out and it's hard to buy all the stuff and sit down to make them any cheaper than u can buy good leads for 10-12 bucks.
9  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Garmin Antennas on: May 01, 2013, 10:55:42 pm
I'd have to say it did. It's just hard to say cause I put a new antanna on the hand held and updated it all within a day or so of putting the new antanna on the collars. Regardless of what you do the range boils down to topography of the terrain and in some cases the weather ( clear sky or overcast, low cloud cover etc.).
10  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Garmin Antennas on: May 01, 2013, 08:19:13 pm
I have ones they call " tuff skin".  Thinking I got em on gun dog supply . Com. Just remember where u keep the originals. Garmin won't warranty them with after market antennas.
11  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Young dogs catching pigs? on: May 01, 2013, 08:16:26 pm
Yeah bmc delivers em to hand like a good bird dog hahaha! They just ain't got much life left in em. I got a plan to get em straightened out. If it don't work then I will just live with it. I like the little dogs other than this.

Thanks Reuben.
13  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Young dogs catching pigs? on: April 30, 2013, 07:24:58 pm
Different strokes for different folks I guess. My dogs do kill pigs sometimes but I do not like it at all. I prefer my dogs to bay any size hog. I don't kill hogs unless I am going to eat it. I like to hog hunt to much to kill every hog.

The pigs are typically dead when I get there. I must admit they are great for the grill if they aren't chewed up too bad. It's just not what I'd prefer. Thanks for the insight.

Kill the pigs and let ur dogs roll out not that hard to figure out

That's a given! In fact I do Scold them, and pick them up. Since the race has normally moved out by then I run them up the track and put them back in the race. I mean some things are going to be obvious like culling,or the above comment. And yes on hogs they will both roll out when the catch dog gets there.
15  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Young dogs catching pigs? on: April 29, 2013, 10:33:57 pm
I haven't been faced with this so I'm looking for suggestions and wisdom on the topic.
Here's the scenario. For the last three hunts we have bayed sounders of sows and pigs. In this area little pigs are a year around thing. So the problem is when they bay up my two dogs will grab up a pig each and let the hogs roll out, twice even while other dogs stay with the bigger hog. The dogs are 2.5 and 3.5.  And the breed shouldn't matter but they are YBMC and a Lacy in case u think it does. I also hunt jagds which are gamey/trashy little boogers and never had this problem. So far the advise I've gotten ranges from  e- collar therapy to putting a striper in the kennel with the offending dogs. What does the infinite wisdom of the board say?

Break sticks make great gifts. You can make at least 2 out of one hatchet handle.
17  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: The Masters on: April 13, 2013, 09:53:49 am
I tried playing as a younger man. Then realized that any sport or job where the object is to see how FEW times you can hit something just wasn't going to be my thing. If the object is to Hit the ball LESS than anyone else then I'm a champion!! Fact being I sawed the head off my calaway driver and use the shaft to keep whiny catch dogs quiet on the truck. Does that say anything about my priorities? LOL
18  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Hog Dog Lifespan? on: April 13, 2013, 07:45:19 am
I had a couple bird dogs that almost got to vote. But then again they didn't have the job hazards that a hog dog does

Looks like a fair price anyway.  Not every state can say they buy oil locally. Smiley
