What kind of nose and bottom are you consistently getting with the bird dog crosses?
They have plenty of bottom, they dang sure don’t like to quit. They wind pretty good but they’ll put their noses down and grind out a track as well. They have a hotter nose about like most cur dogs but they hunt out pretty good and once they’re in hogs they’re all I could ask for.

what's in the bird dog crosses and what are you using them for?
They’re hog dogs too. They are mostly birddog with a touch of bulldog, hound, and bmc. And even a leopard dog in there a little ways back.

Basically you know how anywhere you go there are “local legends”? The dogs that when you mention their name, anyone from that area who has been hunting for a while will immediately know? Over the years I’ve either gotten pups directly off of or bred my females to 5 different “local legends”.  I say local but they spread out all across Ga. Two of those are straight birddog which is why mine are more birddog than anything.

So I’ve bred best to best and crossed them to point that I now have two litters that can all be traced back to the 5 dogs mentioned above. From here I plan on tightening up the line with what I got.

Probably more than you wanted to know but you got it lol

Man the brindle in the second picture is looking sharp. I see lots of people that will put 1/8 pit in their dogs to make them rough, or 1/8 hound for a bit more nose, but haven’t seen people do 1/8 Malinois for anything. I wonder why, they have incredible amounts of drive, athletic ability, and also good noses.

I’m working on it. Slowly but surely. Got a line of bird dog crosses that I invest most of my kennel space and time on

The brindles are the crosses and the red ones are full blooded.

Definitely would cross with a Mal before a Sheppard. I have some full blooded mals and two that are Malinois Greyhound and Pit cross. They are bad news. I mainly use them with thermal and night vision as sight dogs but only cause they're so gritty. They will take a track and hunt like nobody's business to though. We're friends on FB so you may have seen some videos of them from time to time.

I have a line of bird dog crosses I hunt right now but been kicking the idea of working in some Malinois blood into my daylight dogs. I really would like to find the right Plott dog to cross to a malinois.

I always wondered if my mals would bay or catch. Yours are catch??? I know for sure they would hunt and had the endurance and speed to do so, but was to worried to try them in the woods in fear they would catch out a mile away. I didnt want to risk it as the 2 i had were such good guard dogs it wasnt worth it to experiment 4 me, and not like i didnt have strike a catch dogs that worked just fine anyhow...

My Mal crosses are 1/2 Mal 5/16 Greyhound 3/16 Pit. Very fast and athletic and catch as hard as any bulldog I've seen. My full blooded Mal yard dog will bay a bad hog but if/when he catches he don't let go. He runs loose and keeps strange people off the property.

Funny story... One day I was at home sick and on the couch in my boxers. I heard him outside raising straight hell. It went on for about 10 minutes and I got up to see what he was up to and he had about a 350 pound black guy up on the hood of his car bayed up! I hollered at him and he sat down and never took his eyes off of him. The guy said sir can you get your dog, i'm such and such with the Jehovahs Witnesses and wanted to talk. Told him I was sick and not interested at the time. Never seen him again lol

I have fed about every food mentioned so far along with Diamond HI Energy. About 3 months ago I switched mine over to Valu Pak. They're currently on the black bag grain free 28/20 and love it. Dark solid stools and they are slick as ever. I'll put them on 26-18 when it warms back up.  IMO it's the best i've tried.

Jpuckett If your wanting to create more range/bottom, you will be going backwards with adding in lurcher/sight hounds IMO. They are most of the time just that, sight hounds. Once out of sight, they lack the drive and nose to keep after it.

I hunt both track dogs and sight dogs. I run my track dogs in the daytime, and run my sight dogs off night vision. I would never add the sight dog blood into my track dogs. You may end up with a good dog but odds are you are going to shorten the range and decrease their tracking ability, but they ought to be faster lol.

I would look at adding in some pointer blood our hound if you don't mind one possibly being open.

I look for the one that is all over the place and into everything, the one not paying attention to anything else and doing his/her own thing. I like to see dominance over the other pups and also look for good conformation.

How do those bird dogs bay for you, the 2 GSPs ive had hunted great but were to gritty for me personally, not sure if thats their normal or just the 2 i had??

Mine will all bay anything over 100 pounds the majority of the time. Sometimes they'll get froggy and catch a good one that either don't have much fight in him or they get in a tight spot and its catch or be caught lol. They get gritty on a runner but will back up and bay once they get him stopped. That is the style I was after though. I don't have to worry about running a 50 pound pig for miles and I don't have to worry about having a good size meat hog chewed up before I get there with the bulldog.

I wish I knew. The dog that all of these go back to was a backyard breeding between a gsp and a English pointer. He is a once in a lifetime dog.

I've got more but these are a few that I had pictures of. The second pic of the dog with red patches was the best I ever owned. The hog in the pic killed her. She trailed 1.7 miles the way the crow flies and bayed him in his bed. The young male is my two year old and he's been doing as good as I could ask

Update:

He is definitely blind! But good news is it doesn't seem to be effecting him much. He hasn't missed any yet since I started back taking him, but you will cuss him if you have to lead him to a bay... lol He will go to the opposite side of every tree you come to!

Thank you

I go hog hunting with Mike  and freinds then go run my dogs on wild quail ... I've done this I guess for 3 years now or more . I'm hardly ever home like hog dogs it takes a lot of birds to make a bird dog and they ain't gonna learn anything in their kennels

It's nice to see my efforts pay off when I win , but honestly I just love running them by myself

I thought I'd update that ..

There sure is a lot of nice young dogs on this ., wonder if any others turned out

Chris,
You ever use any of them bird dogs on hogs? Thats about all I run. Every track dog I have except for one is at least 1/2 bird.

No sir.. I've heard of some people having success at it .

Curious What would you say in general bird dogs add to your hog dogs ?
ThankS

Aw man theres a lot I like about bird dogs. Stamina, high prey drive, Bottom, Gritty, and a good nose to boot. They actually bay very well to. Mine will bay anything over 100-120lbs, but will eat ones arse up to get him stopped. My 2 best dogs are 3/4 bird, and I have a full blooded 2 year old that is about to take over.

I know some lines don't turn out well, but between me and my buddy we've had pretty good luck with high percentages of our pups making hog dogs. Ours will put their nose down and grind out a track though, where some birddogs want to run with their head up the whole time winding.

I don't think you'd be disappointed if you tried one.

16  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Wound closure time frame on: January 18, 2017, 09:19:31 am
Well I was worried about it last night and went ahead and put some more staples in it. I was thinking about sewing it together but he just will let me put staples in. I really doubt he would have sat still enough to let me sew it. Any ideas on knocking a dog like this out so you can work with them easier?

Dexdomitor is what I use to work on mine when its real bad. And use Antisedan to wake them back up. .5ml is enough to knock out a 60 pound dog and if they start to wake up before your done just give them a .2ml dose. You just have to remember to give them the exact amount of Antisedan once your are done.

if the only thing is glazed over chances are he will get his vision back

Thats good news. It looks like the eye was not damaged but he was bleeding out the corner of his eye. Almost looked like tears of blood so not sure what actually did get damaged. It is still glazed but hopefully its just the eyes way of healing itself. But as of right now its just sore and he doesn't open it much. I've been putting some ophthalmic antibiotics in his eye so hopefully his vision will come back.
18  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / One Eyed Catch Dog on: January 12, 2017, 10:59:13 am
Over the weekend we bayed a group of about 30 head. Mostly big hogs. Let them bay for about 20 minutes and they finally split one off from the group but only about 50 yards away. Ended up sending the catch dog to the hog that was singled out to the left of the group and as my luck would have it he took back to the rally soon as I sent the bulldog.

They worked him over for about 10 minutes and the rally finally broke. The bulldog ended up staying caught on a big red boar. He did however get cut in his eye. It is glazed over and I'm pretty sure he won't be able to see out of that eye anymore. Bad thing is, haven't had this dog very long at all. Picked him up at a gas station cause the chief of police jokingly said "yall take that poor dog home with ya," so I gave him a chance and he made a hell of a catch dog.

My question is, have any of you or anyone you know ever had a one eyed catch dog? Did you have problems with him missing much?
19  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Night vision on: December 30, 2016, 10:52:41 am
I know your not looking to spend much, but I wouldn't waste money on $300 night vision. 75-100 yds is about all it will be good for, and that's with a full moon. You will be disappointed. I have a few sets of night vision. 3 are PVS 14's and one PVS 7, all third generation. Two of the 14s are brand new, never used. They have pinnacle tubes, manual gain, autogated, and are top quality. The brightness and clarity is insane. I don't shoot with mine but you can mount it behind a regular scope and remove it if/when needed. If you ever looked through a set you'd want one and wouldn't think about buying the $300 set.
20  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Raising Pups on: December 28, 2016, 08:53:13 am
I'm curious to see how some of you raise pups from the time they are weened. Mostly interested in whether you keep them all penned together, let them run loose, pen separate, etc. What differences have you seen in pups that run loose vs the pups that stay penned up? Or do you think it even makes a difference?
