1  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: How tight is too tight? on: May 06, 2019, 06:31:24 am
I know that unwanted health effects happen in line breeding and breeding dogs in general. To rephrase my question, are certain crosses (such as breeding a son back to his mother) more likely to bring out health defects? Its also worth noting that the gyp was line bred. Dont know exactly how tight.

Anyone else had trouble breeding son back to mama? Made a cross like this a few years ago. Pups met all expectations in regard to hunting, but had one with a terrible immune system that got sick and died at about 15 months and two others in the litter that were just poor-doers (fed well and had wormer running out of their ears but always looked underweight and had rough hair coats). I've been told that a mother-son cross is harder on the gene pool than a father-daughter cross, aka more likely to have unwanted effects.

4  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Quick Track System on: November 11, 2018, 06:52:17 pm
I know I don't post on here often but I get on and read pretty regularly. Five or six years ago, I swapped a coon dog for a quick track telemetry system and two dead quick track collars. I sold out of hog hunting four years ago when I went to college (am now in vet school at OK State). On winter break and during the summer, I usually get to hunt with buddies at home so I was considering getting the quick track system back in working order to use occasionally for hog hunting and to run on cowdogs. When I got into hog hunting in about 2010, most of the guys I hunted with were using garmin and I bought a 220 as my first tracking system so I dont have a lot of experience with the telemetry systems. In yalls opinion, is it worth the money to replace the batteries on the collars? I know you can buy the older garmin equipment dirt cheap these days but I was considering keeping the quick track system long term in order to use as a back up when I graduate and get back into hog hunting. Does quick track or another company still work on old telemetry collars? Would it be better to buy new collars instead? If I bought new collars, what brand should I look into? Would the collar batteries stay up with only getting used a few times a year? Thanks in advance for yalls input.

6  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: if you had to start over on: January 20, 2014, 07:10:02 pm
I probably couldn't afford to buy all finished dogs as some of you are suggesting. Most likely I would I would buy one finished strike dog and  a well started dog that is finding its own pigs. A finished bulldog because they are usually cheap enough. I would probably spend the most money on two pups out of a good working line and hope that they would be as good or better than my strike dog in time.
7  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: catahoula or BMC? on: November 20, 2013, 09:01:35 pm
I don't think that it is necessarily about the breed. It is more about the line of dogs and the genetics involved. Every breed has culls and good ones. The best thing to do is to find a line of dogs that works for you. JMO

9  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: hogs turning feral on: September 07, 2013, 02:13:22 pm
So will a dog take a domestic pig's track just like it would take a feral pig's track. Or is there a difference in the smell?
10  THE CLASSIFIEDS / THE DOG TRADE / Big BMC on: September 03, 2013, 08:14:04 pm
1.5 year old  male. Started good. Has found a handful of pigs. He is very gritty but not suicide. Close range hunter. Will roll out with other dogs. Out of good bloodline. Comes from working stock. Will shut a hog down. I am selling him because he is too rough for my pack. He has not been hunted all summer. He took to hunting very naturally. Asking $450 and he is well worth that.

12  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: whats the longest bay you have ever heard of seen? on: July 24, 2013, 11:19:11 pm
I had a dog bay for 11 hours one time. I left him one night bayed off the property figuring he would come back to my truck at about 11 p.m. I got to him at 10:30 the next morning. He was sitting still on garmin with no barks. I walked 60 yards from him and saw him. He and the pig were both laying down staring at each other. I hollered at him and he jumped up and started baying. Couldnt call him off. Had to go all the way home and get a bulldog.  Caught a little sow bout 120lbs

17  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: My dog is fat. Help! on: July 05, 2013, 11:42:51 pm
I feed Diamond High Energy in the winter when I am hunting a lot. I don't hunt much much in the summer either. I usually switch to Diamond Maintenance formula. It has a lower fat content and keeps the dogs lean in the summer when exercise is limited. It works for me. You might want to try it.
