Same thing happens in AB's. Most working people will pick the pitty looking ones, even though some bullier ones have great drive and good wind. On the bully side, people pay up to 3k for the most dysfunctional piece of garbage dog money can buy. There are good breeders on both sides that can't give dogs away . SMH

I've had the same quandary about AB's. Why do so many breeders insist on white dogs? They stick out like a sore thumb in the woods, making easy to be shot, grabbed by a mountain lion, or gored by a hog. not to mention health problems associated with tightly bred white dogs. And for protection purposes they have a hard time doing their job. I personally like a near solid brindle dog. you'll never see them coming at night, and just barely see them during the day in the woods.

Sometimes I buy the 55 pound bags at the feed store and sometimes the 40 pound bags at TSC... Always the black bags of sportsmix...
In the last 6 months or longer I have noticed I have to feed quite a bit more to keep my dogs at a good weight...they look good but it is a thorn in my side with this issue...I wormed my dogs several times and even swapped to a new wormer and no improvement...maybe I will swap back to diamond high energy if I can cut the feeding ration back...
I was meaning to post on this issue but this is a good time to do it...
My dogs were emaciated on sportmix. we had a bad summer last year and both my dogs got super skinny. I switched to diamond high energy and with in 3 weeks they were back to normal. i overfed them a little over the winter, and they got a bit overweight. as soon as school lets out for spring break, I'm running them like crazy. thats odd sportmix is defiantly higher quality than that diamond high energy, cant explain that one. Sure it wasnt worming them? My bulldogs eat their poop on diamond I thought it was worms. wormed them and still skinny. switched to diamond and weight picked up. my older dog eats number 2 no matter whats going on. Its her favorite pastime lol.

Basically what i'm looking for is an old school farm utility dog. An old school bulldog with old school function. I don't really hunt for sport, I look at it as a survival skill. I would need a dog to hunt anything from squirrels to bear(not that I would with a bulldog, but they have to be willing), easygoing and not overly prey driven, protective but not man aggressive( there is a difference), good with kids( especially the rotten ones),good with whoever I'm good with( until I'm not),good with livestock(I know that takes training) and most of all a good companion. I've checked out some hybrid dogs, and most were bred for sport. Sport also is not my cup of tea. there are better dogs for sport. Malinois and Dutch shepherds come to mind. AB can do it, but its not their strong suit.
Where bulldogs shine is in farm work(catching, guarding, pulling and companionship). In a nutshell that's what I'm looking for.

I would be concerned about wind, heat tolerance, mouth.
Nothing I hate more then a bulldog with a collapsing esophagus breathing so hard I can't hear myself think
The more they look like a pit bull the better these things are(usually)
It really is a crap shoot. I've had pit bulls with no stamina, and seen bulldogs with great stamina. it's a bunch of factors you don't see unless you either work the dog, or spend a ton of money at the vets office. I'm just done with pit bulls for now.my patience for dog aggression is gone. I use dogs more for protection work than hunting, but catch dogs have all the basic components of a good protection dog.

I've been to Don's house and went through his yard with him. He's got some nice dogs for sure.
I checked him out after reading your post. He does have some nice looking dogs. But like to many other bulldog breeders, He's a little to proud of his dogs when it comes to price. I've said it before, I don't expect a free dog. Nobody owes me any favors, and I'm nobody special. But 1,000 to 1,500 for a catch dog seems a bit high. The people I've gotten dogs from in the past I thought were fair. They got me started in bulldogs and I'm thankful for them. They breed a more standard hybrid type dog. They have been helpful in finding a more old school bulldog for breeding to my female or getting a pup from. I figure I'd ask some hog dog people to see if they knew any bulldog men that sold bulldogs at catch dog prices.

Really nice looking dog mike! I remember when you posted her on truegrit message board years ago. I was much more jaded back then and I the throws of dog line retardism...lol
Honestly, alpha, I’d steer you towards Scott at yellow hammer. Just cause I know him well, we ate close friends of bout a decade, and know he would treat you right if you wee disappointed if he thought you were right for one of his dogs in the first place. He has a number of old school lines he had been diligently tracing and combining in various degrees for years.
We have kinda dif view if the breed origin but it ain’t never made a bit of difference in our friendship and respect for each other.
...not that it has with me or some of the others it’s just Scott and I communicate more frequently than with the others and our common passion for some ol raggedy cur dogs out of the same blood, now a days since life took me out that whole bulldog scene
I hear you. I've been focusing on school and getting my health back together. The only bulldogs I've thought about are the two I own. I've just had the thought about the types of dogs I like looks wise and what I want out of a dog work wise. My ten year old dog is a fine example of what I want out of a dog. She is laid back in the house( unless there is food involved) and always cheerful and social. she will hunt anything from rats to hogs with the same intensity. Has a bit of protective drive. I've been able to sleep on the porch in a bad neighborhood with that dog next to me and not worry about anything. Sad thing was, I never got to breed her. I was super picky about what I bred her to. when I did try to breed her, it was a bit too late. I just want another dog like her: easy to live with, easy to work, can be social in public. where I would improve her is her size and teeth. she around 55 lbs. and has peg teeth. I would also make her more of an hole in the butt to strangers at home. I've lived in a rough neighborhood for so long, that I truly see the value of a territorial dog. when you have a territorial dog, people don't walk through your yard and just take what they like. That in a nutshell is what I'm looking for, so if you could put me in touch with Scott at yellowhammer, please do.

The dog I posted above is directly off Alan's yard... and so is this gyp that I hunted for several years. I believe she was a Crusher granddaughter... one of the hardest catching bulldogs I've ever owned. I've heard that crusher produced hard catch dogs. I don't doubt that at all. But are are a few people that have dogs down off of crusher that are the exception. I ended up getting a dog that was crusher on the top side of the ped and honey girl on the bottom. I couldn't even get her to chase a ball or a laser pointer dot. I got her from a breeder that breeds on crusher TIGHT. she breeds so tight, that she gets long haired bulldogs out of her stock. Another breeder had a crusher great grandson that she could not get to catch or bite a sleeve. she ended up giving him to a pet home. I understand that not every pup in a litter will grow up to burn the woods down to bite some bacon, but my experience with that blood has not been great. Id love to have a better experience with it. seeing as I like the look of most of the crusher offspring I've seen and have heard great things about the blood.

I’m ain’t run tell you what you want... you got to find that for yourself... lots of us walked thru the fire and learned along the way what burns less. You said you liked the look of a dog and posted a pic. I knew the look of the dog you described and it’s lineage and pointed you in that direction. I’d say the temperament be there as well knowing the dogs behind that dog. I ain’t no commercial for Alan. I like Alan as a person and glad I know him and think we can call each other friends even tho we don’t have common dogs.He breeds what suits him and a lot of folks like it and a lot don’t. Really don’t concern me just pointing you in a few directions that you may find a dog that suit you. I the more standard type abs myself. I like the longer nose and more athletic less blocky frame Britt or anerican legends may produce. Not to say Scott , tico, Alan or Don or a list as long as my arm couldn’t and doesn’t produce out of certain of their dogs as well.... This is coming from a guy that went thru a litteny of abs from all dif bloodlines and lives the breed but now happy with his ab/pit and ab/cat crosses...they ain’t worth much and ain’t papered. But I like what they are and don’t sell dogs so was trying to point you in direction u was stealing towards
I appreciate that very much. I'm not trying to raise hackles, I'm just giving an account of my personal experience. I get the more athletic type AB. I've got one myself. She will be three in March. the thing about the more pit bull looking ones that I've seen my self is that they tend to be harder to handle. took me a solid month of knocking that dog over the head to get her to stop chasing cats. I have a ten year old bulldog that looks how I describe. it only took me raising my voice twice to get her to stop chasing cats. both dogs have caught hogs. My older one busted a tooth on a hog. I hear my experience is very common with both types of standard dogs. Unfortunately, the type of dog I'm looking forgets bred for money more thatn working ability. I use bulldogs more for protection work than hog hunting. Catch dogs have the main ingredients to make a good protection dog, but they need the training. I like a blockier dog for that job. Blocky but still athletic. I'm not asking the dog to run a two second hundred meter dash and scale the empire state building, but they have to work.

If you like that dog I’d go with his breeder Alan Scott, owl hollow kennels. Britt has what look to be really nice dogs from posts I’ve seen over the years. Maybe more standard type then you are looking for... idk Scott Pugh at yellow hammer kennels has dogs with the temperament you describe. And tico at jam up bulldogs as well. ....maybe don Mathews at konfederate kennels. Just get a dog from a breeding off their more blocky stock when it comes up... talk to each look at the dogs they are breeding and go from there
Most of Alan Scott's stuff that looks how I describe is off of crusher. I've known some people out my way that have that blood. For some reason, the only ones that seem to like it are the ones that do nothing but feed and breed. No disrespect to Alan Scott, just being honest.

This dog came from Indian Valley Ranch... Britt Garcia.
OK Good to know. I'm just really getting into the standard side a bit more now. My focus is on producing a good farm dog that still has drive, but has a cooler head. Not a cat or chicken killer. Not an outright rowdy dog that's hard to handle. A dog that can be a pet, but can also be put to work when needed. One I dont have to worry about kids getting hurt( unless I decide not to dock his tail).

I'm almost done with school, and I'm ready to get back into my dogs again. I'm looking for standard american bulldogs that don't look like pit bulls. they should have a shorter muzzle( but not smashed in) and heavier bone. Basically the old type farm utility dog. any Idea where I can start looking, or who I can talk to? Many thanks in advance.
