1  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: need advice asap on: November 29, 2012, 08:56:51 pm
i came home today and noticed another hog not acting the same way but was slow in movement. in the best interest of my show pigs and not wanting to make the wild hogs suffer i put them down.

4  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / need advice asap on: November 28, 2012, 10:44:12 pm
ive got 3 wild hogs 25-35 lbs that i bought bout a month ago. when i 1st got em they would run like crazy when i went in the pen. not as bad now. i came home today to see my gate open. i figured they were gone for sure. to my surprise they were walking around and not going nuts. i managed to get them back in the pen. my concern is my gilt which also happens to be the smallest is now all of a sudden just walking around with her head down and tends to walk in circles like shes confused or something, i noticed she will just bump into the fence like she dont see it at times also.  and while she was out i was able to walk up to her pick her up and not even a squeel. any suggestions on what it could be and what i should do. the other 2 are just fine. i also have 2 show pigs that are worth alot of money is why im mainly concerned. they are in a  different pen but in the same area.

6  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: would you reccomend it or not??? on: October 21, 2012, 06:40:55 am
well when i said i could get them cheap i should have been more informative. i cant get them as cheap as i picked up the 2 wild boars.
7  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / would you reccomend it or not??? on: October 21, 2012, 06:15:36 am
i have a couple of boar pigs... one is prob 20-25 pounds, the other is maybe 15-20 pounds. i havent had any luck finding a couple of sows in that range or a little bigger. i do know where i can get some pure breed show hogs real cheap though. my question is would you reccomend getting the show hogs and trying some cross breeding with my wild boars or should i get two wild sows for them. my purpose for the breeding is to get a litter, keep 2 for slaughter for myself, with the rest im going to raise them to bout 100 pounds then have them slaughtered and give them to families that are in need. ive got a deal worked out with my butcher on a real good deal to do this. thanks for any advice and reccomendations on this.
8  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: permits on: October 17, 2012, 07:17:47 am
when i built my pen, i dug footings 4 ft deep and put cattle panels under the ground. then my actual 20 ft wide by 50 ft long pen is welded to the top of the panels  underground. they would have to dig a tunnel 6 ft down then back up to get out that way lol. at the end of the pen is a 20 x 30 all wooden barn on a concrete floor. half the barn is penned off for them to have shelter and when it comes farrowing time. ive watched the smallest sow jump up bout 3 or 4 ft and was concerned bout possibly putting a pitched roof over the cattle panels.
9  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / tips and advice appreciated on: October 16, 2012, 10:30:37 pm
i have an extensive background with swine genetics with seaboard farms which was 100% ai, and i know totally different from wild hogs. i went and originally purchased very young 2 sow and 3 boars. well after putting the 1st sow in the pen i realized my panels needed modifying lol. i now have 3 boars and 1 sow.....the 2 youngens look to be maybe 2-3 months old and the 2 bigger ones look to be 3-4 months old. my intentions is to get an even number of sows to boars which the pairs will be seperated. im going to breed and raise them for the purpose of keeping 2-3 out of a litter for slaughter and give the rest away. now that ive gotten that out of the way sorry it took so long....what im wanting to know is, is there any tips or advice as to getting them to calm down a bit i know their young and used to being wild..i know yall may call me nuts but at seaboard you could have a barn full of hollering hogs, turn on a radio and 5 minutes later silence. going to try that with these but also looking for help or tips form some of yall that have done what im attempting to do

12  GENERAL CATEGORY / HUNTING AND FISHING / Re: Stink bait, Frozen bait, fresh cut bait or live bait? on: October 15, 2012, 10:02:48 pm
We use a little of everything but the best we have found are

Fresh or frozen cut shad. Cut the head off, the tail off and fish with the head and middle.

COOKED frozen shrimp. It's tougher than raw and they are usually all the same size, and your not winding up with a bunch of heads and trash like you can in the TV shrimp.

Danny Kings catfish bait. It's a dough bait but it really holds on a treble hook nice and they will attack it hard.

Perch. Enough said.

We also use the hell out of chum. Mix one package of yeast, a beer, and about 3/4 of a 5 gallon bucket full of 1/2 chicken scratch and 1/2 milo or cracked corn (not whole!!). Enough water for everything to cover about an inch. Then let it soak. Don't put a lid or anything, or it will swell and pop it off. It's ready when there is black and green slime all over it.
just curious are you having to add cattails you your danny king.  i used to use it all the time, i still use lewis king...since danny sold his recipie i have had lots of trouble with it being loose and not staying on the hook. found that wrapping it with mesh helped but to much hassle.
