They look something like the Country Bulldogs I saw in Georgia back in the 60's and 70's. Tall leggy dogs, real smart, good wind. Very nice.

Google Martin's Canine Feed. No other dog food brought out the muscles in my bulldogs like Martin's formula.

They are a hoax breed created by Lana Lou Lane. They are a cross between American Bulldogs, catahousla, pit, and who knows what else. Lana saw how much Mr. John Johnson was getting for his Georgia Giants and came up with a similar romantic story about how her uncle Buck always had one at his side, way back in the day. Total nonsense. Later on, Cattle Rustler Kennels added Olde Bulldogge to the breed.

Mr. Carnathan had a severe stroke some years back and I was told he had to sell all of his dogs. I purchased two from him and both were solid. You could see a lot of bulldog in them.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Pure BMC that will catch?
|

I don't mean bulldog crosses, I mean pure yellow or red blackmouths that made good catch dogs. Is there any particular strain or breeder that is known for this? Years ago, Howard Carnathan of Tupelo, Mississippi claimed his would.

I used to feed my American Bulldogs raw chicken parts all time, but I would mix it with a low protein dry dog food like Purina Dog Chow. I did it for years (with pits too) and never had problem.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Painter American Bulldogs?
|
on: September 28, 2014, 08:17:44 pm
|
Back in the 1980's when Joe Painter was living in Chicago, I bought two American Bulldogs off of him. They were supposedly out of his famous Sgt. Rock dog. I later acquired a few more pure Painter dogs. All turned out great, maturing at about 85 pounds. Two were proven catch dogs in Florida, all good with kids, and all lived a long healthy life. As far as I can see the Painter/Margentina bloodline has not been maintained as has just about vanished. I know that Don Matthew of Konfederate Kennels has a stud he bought of the Margentinas. Throwback Kennels was breeding them for a while, but I heard they dropped out (not sure that is true). Does anyone know of any kennels that have maintained the Painter bloodline?

I used to live in Florida and the Florida Curs I saw looked like little American Bulldogs about small pitbull size. Mostly white with some tan trim. They made fine catch dogs. I never owned one but I saw them in action. They did not look cur like at all. I would have sworn they were pure bulldog. The owner said they went back to real old cracker cowboy lines. Not sure if he was spinning tales or not. Everyone has a strain of bulldog that goes back to his uncle buck who swore he kept them pure, never bred pit into them, blah, blah, blah.

Two crosses popular in Georgia and Florida panhandle: American Bulldog x Redbone hound American Bulldog x birddog Popular in Louisiana and Mississippi: Johnson American Bulldog x game bred pitbull (many believe this is the ultimate bulldog, just can't get any better)

Old time bulldog men used to dangle a pup in the air, holding it by one ear. The that did not cry or whimper was the keeper. I picked a lot of pitbulls and american bulldogs like that. But I have found there is no secret except luck. Pups that looked like bombs turned out great and visa versa. Course how they are raised/trained can turn a winner into a looser.

I have seen good bulldog catch dogs that weigh as much as 85 pounds. After that, they loose their heat tolerance, stamina, and ambition. Although I am certain there are exceptions out there. If a dog can't jump onto the back of a pickup truck, consider that 2.5 strkes against him in my book.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Anybody use bulldog/pointer crosses?
|
on: April 10, 2014, 08:52:38 pm

My friend in south Georgia told me this cross was very popular in his area and produces better dogs than bulldog and red bone crosses. By bulldog I think he meant American Bulldog (white English) or pitbull.

As far as I know, the Gotti line are not pure pitbulls, they are AMERICAN BULLY DOGS which means they probably have some Old English Bulldog or some other bull dog breed mixed in. That is why they are so close to the ground and thick. Research them on the Internet and see. I would go with either a pit/AB mix or a AB/catahoula mix for a catchdog. There are plenty of pure pits that make good catch dogs also.

I never owned one, but my buddy in south Georgia told me that back when he owned catch dogs (he only has Plotts now) all he used as bulldog/catahoula crosses. I think there is some registry that actually registers them as a breed now and calls them Catahoula Bulldogs. Years ago, Howard Carnathan started fooling around with that mix but I think he eventually went back to BMCs. For some reason, he did advertise his BMC foundation dog, Bruno, as a Catahoula Bulldog one time. I saw the ad.
