HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Wound closure time frame

Well I was worried about it last night and went ahead and put some more staples in it. I was thinking about sewing it together but he just will let me put staples in. I really doubt he would have sat still enough to let me sew it. Any ideas on knocking a dog like this out so you can work with them easier?

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Wound closure time frame

Got one of my younger dogs cut pretty bad a week ago today. The hog cut him from the corner of his mouth back about 4 inches. I stapled it shut on the same day. Went and checked on him today and he has ripped everyone of them out. How long is too long to wait to close a wound like this?

Well folks! They still have it in them and my newer dogs are doing great also. Went Monday to a WMA hunt in a god forsaken place called Mallory Swamp here in Florida. Hogs everywhere but the blocks are miles wide and covered in titi (really dense tall bushes) and soaking wet, but hey its called a swamp for a reason. Anyways we caught 7 hogs there and no pictures. Then Tuesday me and a buddy went hunting in our hunting club and wound up catching 3. The 3rd one on Tuesday was about 150lbs boar hog with 2 inch cutters. Crazy thing is my buddys dogs had just went through that same area and ran an armadillo and a deer out and wouldn't go back in. I sent my dogs in and in just a few minutes they fell to baying. I sent them some help and they had him caught when I got in there. The same dogs that my buddy was using had been making mine look like total crap for a little while. Well my dogs got their pay back yesterday. Had a great day and my dogs definitely made me proud. My young black mouth got cut from his lip to his ear and my leopard gyp got a small poke in her shoulder. They seem do be ok though. Again just want to say thanks for the advice from everyone.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Catahoula GSP cross

I have a buddy who has a registered GSP male he wants to breed to my Catahoula female. I think with both of their hunting styles being similar it would make a good pair. I've never heard of or seen this combination. Just wondering if anyone on here has any or has seen any. Pics would be great in anyone has any. Thanks.

Well... I got to go last night. No pictures to show though. We bayed a big one but once we sent the catchdog to it, he broke. We finally caught the dogs about a mile later because the hog wouldn't stop. The dogs I had out did like they used to do. Im guessing it was the strange dogs.

The dogs range from 2 to 4 maybe 5 years old. The one I mentioned that is doing good still is a younger dog. The oldest one and the one that has bayed the most hogs for me is acting like he has no idea what to do. I normally hunt my dogs alone but every now and then hinted with other people's dogs. This isn't the only time they've been hunted around other dogs it's just the only time they've acted like a bunch of junk dogs. Like I said I know what they're capable of and it's just disappointing.

HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Havent hunted in a while, now Im paying for it.

With being really busy before deer season and then wanting to deer hunt more than usual during deer season I let hog hunting take a back burner to a lot of things. Well now I believe I am paying for it. Every dog in my pens would hunt and find hogs for me. I was very happy with the caliber of dogs I had. So I took a week off between Christmas and New Years to strictly hog hunt with some buddies who were coming up from south florida. We had no problem finding hog sign and my buddies had no problem catching hogs with their dogs. Out of all 7 of my cur dogs only one would hunt like usual. The rest almost seem like they have never been hunted before. I figured after a couple of days they would get back to normal and live up to what they were but at no point did they get any better.
I had a long talk those same buddies and we figured its either one of two things. The lack of being hunted over the last SEVERAL months, or them being around strange dogs. Any advice or ideas? Never had this problem with my dogs but I've also never let them sit this long or do I hunt them with strange dogs either. Thanks!

HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Possibly moving to Texas

WayOutWest, yeah I heard its warming up out there. Two of our crews from florida just got back from California. Im hoping to get out to alaska or canada, that would be nice.
Indian Valley, Ive been doing some looking all around lufkin. Ive found several nice homes to buy but I would much rather spend some a little time there before commiting to buying a house. But it seems homes for sale are more frequent than homes for rent. If I do rent something im stuck in a 1 year lease.
Charles, I was mistaken. I was looking at Central and got it mistaken for Hudson I guess.

Sounds good man. Ive got limited experience with aircraft. Currenty a helicopter crewmember trainee. The job I applied for in texas is a firefighting equipment operator position. Thats what I do now for the Florida Forest Service, been at it for 7 years now. Just trying to go after bigger and better things. The federal government pays alot more and they actually allow overtime. Ive also done my time ground pounding on a firefighting hand crew. Ive dont several trips out west to assist with major fires. Still waiting on the word from them though. Ill let yall know what I hear.
Also, someone put on here to stay away from northwest lufkin. Is the hudson area considered northwest lufkin? The Peddler has several houses for rent in hudson and I know some folks said that was a nice area.

Charles, I assumed you were on a fire crew, not a helicopter. That side of things is a little different than what I do. My grandfather is acctually a retired helicopter pilot. He did many years fighting fire with a sky crane. From what I was told, my duty station will be in ratcliff, but things change. If they offer me the job I'm going to take a week trip up there and do some looking. I will definately look at those areas metnioned by all of you. I would prefer to be in a small town, thats what I've always live in and what Im used to.

Charles, thanks for the info. I definitely want to stay away from anything like that. I've looked at several houses on the south end of lufkin. Are you doing some AD work for the usfs? I currently work for the Florida Forest Service but the pay and benefits are much better with the federal government. Im trying to get my foot in the door, and it's especially nice to possibly be going to a place with hogs.
Indian Valley, I will definitely be in contact with you. Any kind of local knowledge will help.
And just to put it out there I've got some pretty good dogs for my area of Florida. So if either of y'all wanna do some hinting when I get out there I'm definitely game.

Indian Valley, I will definitely take a look at the peddler. I saw it on Google but it sound kinda scetchy to be honest. And yes I have 2 little girls. One is 6 one is 3.
Charles, we've been looking at all the surrounding towns around the forest. Lufkin, Crockett, Kennard, etc. I'd like to be in a good place for my wife and kids. Schools, and amenities. I know nothing about texas. Only been there once and that was a flight layover on the way to California for a wildfire. So any info or advice would be appreciated.

And while I'm at it. Anyone know of any houses for rent in the area?
