1  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Hog Hunt this Weekend on CARNIVORE on: August 07, 2016, 11:52:27 pm
Watched it tonight. Good show I echo the fair light shown on hunting hogs with dogs and the concern we have for our dogs.

Seen it go both ways. Woods dogs that wouldn't do anything in a pen and pen dogs that done nothing in the woods.

3  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: I always wondered why I never saw a black Panther on: July 26, 2016, 08:57:39 pm
I saw a big cat many years ago. At the time I woulda put a hand on a bible it was black. Today I feel it was an effect of the light and fog combined with the moisture on the grass getting the fur wet causing it to appear darker.

I agree the hardcore DVD's are good ones. I haven't seen them all but the ones I have I enjoyed.

5  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Which Company Runs the Best Cut Vests? on: July 06, 2016, 12:02:14 am
I like my southern style vest by hardcorehogdogs.com mine are all custom built to measurements for my dogs. Caught a lot of good hogs in em. Some they were caught way longer than I would like. I can't say a single bad word about them. I'm not one with lots of money to spend but I feel I got my money's worth with these vest.

Corn is some nasty hunting. Especially at night. You can get in a bind fast and dogs can too. I would rather catch em in the woods any day than corn but I have caught a lot in corn.

I have several hound cross dogs. They were open on track for a long time. They are now more silent than open. This could simply be learned. Usually they will locate bark once or twice then silence. I like this because it does draw the other dogs to the track. With that said if a man wants a silent dog your chances fair better with a cur than a hound. Excitement gets them hounds telling the world about it.

Bottom is what takes the dog to the end of the track be it 1 or 40 miles. It is his want to. His stamina. His desire to finish the job.

It isn't the breed you are looking for. It is the dog that will do the job.

11  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Different Style Question. on: June 05, 2016, 11:39:58 am
I have had dogs stay on a shoat for 4-6 hours with a range from where struck to north most point was over 4 miles as the crow flies. Actual track length I'm not sure. My dogs aren't nothing special. But they were in fine physical shape at the time with the wind and desire to stay. At the time they did this I hunted an area that if you didn't catch the hog at first bay it took stamina to finish them.

As for the question of style well that depends on you and your situation. Not all styles are effective or practice in every situation.

12  HOG & DOGS / GENERAL DISCUSSION / Re: Lost a good friend and hunting partner today on: June 05, 2016, 11:26:24 am
Hate to hear that. I haven't talked to him since last year. He just fell off the radar. I tried to call and even went by his place a few times and never could catch up with him. I hate to hear this. He wasn't a perfect individual no more than any of us and had his flaws. He was a dog man without a doubt.

Do you know if he still had June (walker dog) or the red female pup(redbone X BMC) I gave him both dogs and lost contact. I just want to know how they turned out. Tell Candice to give me a call if you talk to her. 870

14  HOG & DOGS / HOG DOGS / Re: Running style vests on: May 17, 2016, 11:24:22 pm
The trick is the fit. Using a good guide and getting the proper measurements go a long ways. I run all full catch southern style vest. Each measured and built for my dogs. They can put in 8hrs and still not be rubbed raw. Look into custom cut and made vest.

Your dog looks to be below the knee. His looks to be a femur.

I have one that broke his femur in a lateral fracture by a hog. Put in pens and wired it up. He spent 5months in my kitchen in a 4x4 pen. Once healed he spent 2 months in the yard. Then he went back to work.

The femur is a more dense done and takes longer to heal complete. I am very happy with the end results.

I like trashy dogs. They have hunt that can't be taught. If you can ever get them lined out or if you can handle that chase of the first thing that moves. Well you have dogs that will get the job done. As far as trashiest breed heck I have seen them in lots of colors. In my yard you just close your eyes and point.

I would agree that a pack that has experience working together does better than constantly switching dogs. I know I can see the difference in my dogs depending on what dogs I take. I like to shuffle my dogs around within my own yard. The end purpose is to be able to randomly grab dogs and them hunt well together and produce pork.

Go on and get ya one John. U know I got the hook up. Lol. Got some 825's now. Got a used 855 S4. Can get a new 855 pretty quick.

In all honesty I don't know how they would do in the worst stuff but they do get around pretty good. I still say I don't think any bike is better suited to work.
