I've read up on this case a little bit as well. I don't believe the shooter. I think he got a case of the red-ass over somebody letting their dogs run loose previously, and when he saw these dogs running loose (not on his land, mine you... but on public land) he marched over and opened fire. Just because his cattle had been attacked previously by dogs doesn't mean that these guys' dogs were the ones who did it. I don't buy that crap at all. I think this is a simple case of someone taking the opportunity to shoot dogs and feel justified for doing it.
BTW, I don't know how in the world that guy could hold his cool when his dogs were gunned down, the guy brags about it, then levels a shotgun at him too. There's no possible way I would've kept my cool in that situation. It just isn't in me.
