My blue dog took a bad lick about 4 months ago on the inside of his back left leg. I didn't have anything to stitch him so I just put him in the kennel and let it heal. As long as the dog can lick it, it should be alright. His cut was bad, I could fit 3 fingers in it and it was through 2 layers of muscle. You can't even tell he has been cut now.  I wouldn't staple it, if its to deep, it could absess. Just let it heal from the inside out.
