I will say that if your dogs aren't doing well on it, then it may just be that it doesn't agree with your dogs. I had been feeding Diamond High Energy. Not the best dog food around by any stretch of the imagination, but it is without the three "bad nasties" which are known carcinogens - BHT, BHA, and Ethoxyquin. My dogs looked fine and hunted well on Diamond HE, but inconsistencies from batch to batch left me scooping stool that ranged from soft to liquid depending on the bag.
We transitioned to sportsmix. Stools were firm and consistent, but I was feeding exactly double what I fed in diamond and my dogs were still losing weight. Now, to be fair, the dogs did have tapeworms from a nasty bout of fleas last summer. That said, the dogs were able to maintain condition on the diamond even given the tapeworms. Got the tape worms handled and the dogs were still not gaining condition so we switched after a couple months to Victor.
Now that we are on victor, the dogs condition has come back to the same as what we had on diamond. We have no treated again for tapes, but coats are better and the skinny ones have picked up. I still feed roughly double the amount of victor than I fed diamond, but stools are firm and consistent. I will manage with the necessity of feeding double for the sake of my dogs having consistency from bag to bag.
All that said, I don't think Sportsmix is a bad feed. I think that dogs are individuals with differing metabolisms. For whatever reason, my dogs did well on Diamond when a good deal of folks reported their packs not thriving on it. Many people have good luck with Sportsmix, but my dogs did not. I am pleased with Victor so far, and have not had any issues with performance or stamina. As a matter of fact, my greyhound is bouncing off the walls and my old Lizzie dog has more energy than she has had in a long time. Just this past weekend, Lizzie surprised me by going out twice better than a mile - and that is just not like the old dog. Not sure if it is the dogfood or something else.
