We were speculating as to what broke the jaw ourselves. As close as he was to the highway, perhaps he got hit by a car, or maybe got kicked by livestock in one of the nearby pastures. There are two horses in a pasture pretty close to where we got him. I know my horses get mad and kick my hogs all the time when the hogs pester them for more food. Luckily mine tend to get kicked in the bodies and not the head, but I could see where a good kick could bust that jaw.

Whatever caused the injury, the poor hog was in bad shape. You can see how poor he was from the pictures (although he had plenty of fight in him still). He had horrible breath that you could smell a little way away from him because of all the issues in his mouth. He needed to be put down, otherwise he would likely be living in someone's pen.

Fun hunt though, that's for sure.
