I'll agree with the others, that each dog is different but what hasn't been mentioned is the factor of the amount of ground time a dog has been given. A three or four year old dog that hits the woods once a month may still not have it figured out, where a year old dog that runs several times a week might be going like crazy. Dogs learn by repetition.
What I pay a lot more attention to in very young pups is not whether their striking hogs, but how they hunt. A dog that shows independance and is not afraid to leave out and look just tells me it's a matter of time before things start to click.
