Scared has nothing to do with it. Some people have more respect for their dogs (or realize they're worth more) than to intentionally put them into a situation to get beat up or killed. I know injuries happen and are an unfortunate part of the game but if I'm there and able, pride won't stand in the way of me taking other means necessary to protect my pack if I can foresee a problem.
Unless you think your dogs can't stop the hog and bay it again, why not bust the bay?
We bayed a boar in the middle of a drainage culvert one time. Tried everything with no luck to get him or the dogs out. Finally we tied a rope to the catchdog, sent him in and when he caught we pulled the whole group back out. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
