happened to me that way too.  now I not only have a hunting buddy, I've got a dog feeding/kennel cleaning buddy.  He takes care of his own, and I love it.  He even got after me on day for cleaning his dogs kennel.  " You picked up Blue's poop?Huh? I DO THAT!!"
