Same here, clean em with bedadine and cut and heal helps fight infection and keeps it clean.  On bad cuts I give pen the first 3 days and continue with cut and heal daily until healed.  No vet by no means, just seems to work for me.  On another note if a cut will not stay closed, hydro theray is the only way.
