i cant say black & tans are always rougher, i have kinda joked about the fact that if you only kept the black & tans, instead of the colored dogs, you might get a higher percentage of good ones. might be some truth in it, but i think my perception of em has more to do with having seen and owned so many big pretty loud colored dogs that were completely worthless. one of the best dogs i ever had (cow dogs) was a black & tan out of some plain old "leopard dogs" we had for years, and i've had some sorry black & tans out of some supposedly good lines of registered catahoulas that were timid, pea hearted, and absolutely not rough. i think it has more to do with the particular dog, and his lineage, than his color. i also think that like horses or any other  animal that may have "color", to many people have bred for looks and not enough for ability.
