I think I would feel of it and see if it was hard or soft. Then if it felt soft and lime a water baloon I would stick a needle into it and make sure it was just clear r only slightly bloody fluidy like would be seen from a contusion. If was really bloody I would take the dog to the vet and would NOT open it up without hauling him to the vet. I agree that most times it will harden and the body will absorb it. I have seen similar area where a hog has bitten a dog before. Hope he gets well soon for you.
