vest or no vest a dog stands a chance of getting killed one way or another every time you turn it loose.  If you are going to be upset if something happens to it, best leave it in the house. 

I have seen bulldogs retire of old age that have never worn a vest, but had three year old drown in the river a few years ago before I could swim out to him.  You never know what is going to happen.
