When you deal with broken/cracked toenails or toenails that have been completely ripped off, you've gotta get rid of the WHOLE thing.  It's literally the difference between your dog hurting for a few days, or your dog hurting for weeks.

Get some canine toenail cutters, and cut those quips off all the way back to the hairline flush with his toe.  Cut them all the way off.  It'll bleed like holy hell, and your dog won't like you for a few hours, but it will heal ten times faster.  It's hard to bring yourself to do it, but it needs to be done.  Afterwards, give him some antibiotics and soak his foot in warm water and an iodine solution for a few days straight.  If you absolutely have to, you can use 3 shots of whiskey for a sedative (for you, not the dog.)
