If its a rcd it needs to be ear in my opinion, Cause that what he is a catch dog and thats where i want my catch dogs to catch. Now on the other side if its a gritty strike dog. I think it depends on the size of the hog or how bas azz he is. If its a bad hog wanting to run i like him to bark once or twice and grab butt or nutt. And spin with the hog to avoid getting hurt once he has him in check catch it on the ear. Now not only does it need to catch on the ear, but it needs turn turn his butt up against the hog so that his body is not in the way of the teeth. Soo basically they would be standing side by side. I think on a small shoat 75 to a 100 pounds he could get away with catchin it on the snout cause its not as powerful as a big hog And he could probably control it, But i gurantee you a big hog will run fowards in charge to where your dog is back pedalling that will out your dog in great danger, or it will just shake it off. Now does all my dogs do this? No! Would like them to yeah, but that is what i think a ruff dog should do. IF you get one tht is just really really ruff where he wont even bark. HE is a catch dog. So a ruff dog will get down and dirty, but on the other hand knows his limits and knows when to respect a hog. He has got to be a smart dog if he is a ruff dog or he will not last long. I have one question though how in the heck did you train your dog to just call him off of a hog he is caught on? Cause if my dogs anyone of them are caught on a hog. its until him or the hog die or i break him off. Even in a pen. Just curious of it. I have had people tell me they can call there dogs off, but never figured out how they train them or teach them to do that. I beleive my dogs go deaf when they are caught. There eyes roll in they back of there heads its crazy man.
