Yes, use them when you can, just don't spend a lot of money.  Some bay/strike dogs don't need vests. 

After basic dog handling equipment, my good money was spent on a tracking unit and tracking collars for all the dogs. 

For me and my bay/strike dogs, knowing where they are is a bigger safety issue than hogs teeth.
