I think your exactly right, there are a many people that believe just because there dogs range out they're looking for a hog. I have seen first hand where my close to medium range "find dog" will hit track while other dogs ran right pass sign to get out and range. Now with that said there are places or pieces of land where you need a rangey dog because hogs are few and far between. My places have pretty good sign and numerous hogs. In my opinion a good "find dog" or "strike dog" will not flat open up and ran but works his/her way out if sign ain't close by..JMO..I walk hunt most of the time so I don't want a 2 mile dog.
