It depends on the individual dog.
I got a cur from a guy that had been in a pen for almost a year. She hit the ground hunting wide open, no problem. Every good cur I've ever owned could do that after 2 months. She is the longest time example I've seen.
One of my Jagds will fall asleep in the dog box or pen, while the others bounce around like trapped squirrels. The dog is so mellow he's lazy. He turns on and off like a light switch, and time doesn't matter to him.
The other Jagds are liable to act terrible at the beginning of a hunt, regardless of the time they have been penned.
