As a newbie as well I will thow my 2 cents in.
Hook up with a good bunch of guys, sit back and do as told, and be as courteous as you can. I had never even heard of hog doggin till a guy who did it came to work with me. He finally took me along and I was hooked as well. I tagged along countless more times, following my advice above, and now have two free pups from the group who at 8 mos old are really starting to turn it on, and I have first pick of a litter that just recently hit the ground. They could see that I was serious about hog hunting and said they would rather see me start out with some potentially good dogs(pups are a crap shoot), than have to go through all the crap dogs that they did when they get started. Even though I have hunted behind all the parents to my pups, I realize that the pups may not turn out like their parents. But at least having seen the parents work, I know the pups stand a good chance, instead of taking someones word who you dont know.
The guys that I am running with are more than willing to help me out. They said if the pups I have now dont turn out, they will get me some that do. And also I realize that it may take a while to sort through some pups till I find some that hunt the way that I want them to. I am more than willing to wait it out on some free pups than to go dump a ton of money on a dog that someone tells me is great but really isnt worth a thing. Plus it will be so much more rewarding knowing that I raised the dogs from pups.
