You can absolutely get everything you want without crossing anything into the APBT. You just have to find some good lines and breed the dogs that have what your looking for and continue to improve on that until you get it right. It will not happen overnight and will be a work in progress for a long time. Just make sure that you are honest with yourself when you cull. There are APBTs out there that have all of the stamina that you could ever want in any dog.
