To me a close ranging dog hunts out 150-200yds, a medium range is out 400-600yds, and long range is out 1000(+)yrds.  I'm not talking about running a track, I'm talking ranging out and circling back.  The dog that is stays up your butt isn't going to find as many hogs as the dogs that are ranging out. JMO
