Good old garmin has sure helped out this question.  It is now so easy to see how small or big of a circle they are making.  I def think lots of people get range and bottom mixed up!  And this can be hard to judge unless you hunt several times with a dog.  The other day I had one younger dog get out to .89 thought he may be bayed and looked at the map and realized he was still moving all over in about 100 yard area.  So im going to say he was hunting or working a cold track,  then after about 10 min he moved out in a straight line and lost him at 1.2 miles.  Had to drive around to where I lost him to pick him up again, and picked him up at 1.07mi  at this point imsure he had been there for 20min or so buy himself, We had to get in the truck and drive around the roads to him, i'm sure buy the time we had drove the weelers back to the truck, and threw 3 gates and around the county roads it took another 45 min or so.  managed to drive within about 300 yds, and could hear him bayed,  sent a nother young dog to him to help his confidence.  walked in and caught the lil boar weighed about 120.  So what im saying is I have no real way to say if this was range or bottom!  I hope they will make atleast a 300-400 yd circle, but im worried  way more about bottom, than the size of the circle they make!  and yes I agree with what youll have posted about range, being short, med, long.  Long is a real big word to live up to, so if I had to say I would think My dogs are pretty much short to medium range, but at 300-400 yards out its really hard to say if they are just hunting or can smell a cold track! And If they get out to 1mi and dont bay, and come back in, were they just hunting, or could they just not produce the track and lack the bottom to do so!  I dont no exactly what is happening that far out.  sometimes when they get out that far they produce pork , and sometimes they dont.  I have trailed these same dogs several miles, and they produced pork,  so I am hoping they are not lacking bottom, but I have no way to no for sure that far out.   There are so many things that can happed and so many variebels its hard to say.

Now my question.  Drive up on fresh looking sign and have three dogs leave in same direction and go 1mi and all bayed the moment they got there at the same time.  Is this short range?  to me it is short with a little bit of drive!  Im just guessing from what I have read on other post some would call this long range, I wouldnt!
