britt, good question!!!   I have been wondering the same thing, think it must be just people savvy, or lack their of.  On a pearsonal note I have baught two dogs in my life, and couldnt have been more pleased with either deal.  One of the dogs was fairly expensive 10 years ago, he was 16 mo and started.  Found him threw a friend, they clamed he could find a pig in a 15 ac pen, thats how he showed him, and thats what he did.  Cash money on the spot, end of deal.  The other one was a few months later and 8mo old, raised buy the same guy.  Herd about her from same buddy,  another buddy of his had bought her a month before and now needed the money. I bought her sight unseen, she was the single best dog I have ever owned.  So yes there was no trial, but they were both recemonded highely.  I have sold three dogs, two do finical reasons.  Both of these dogs were sold to guys I hunted with' and they new the dogs, no trial cash money end of deal.   Last year I sold a dog here on ethd, didnt no the young man, He drove 3 plus hrs and hunted with her, meet him in town, took him hunting, caught several hogs.  He said he wanted her, told him if he had any doughts not to buy her, come back and hunt with her a couple more times,  cause when he hands me the money, the dog is his done deal.  He paid cash money as agreed in advance, with no trial as agreed in advance.  At this time I gave him my buss card with all info on me and my physical address.  I meet him in town beacuse I dont trust everyone to my house, after spending all day hunting with this young man, I would trust him to my house, and If I didnt trust him I would not have sold him the dog, no amount of money.  I owe this to my dogs!  I called him the next afternoon, and he had caught several hogs with her and was very happy.  I have talked to this young man a couple other times, and he was very pleased with his dog.
What was strange to me, was he was the only one who even called about the dog.  I believe everyone else couldn't or wouldnt pay $1000 for a good dog.  And I understand not everyone can.  But dogs are like everything else in life (YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR)!   So to think you are going to get a good go find a hog type dog for $300--$500 is crazy, unless it is a buddy wanting you to have the dog.  This is how I do bussisnes, if you like it good, if not thats fine also.      Hope this could be helpfull britt.
