When you ask the men I grew up around about a dog and they said he was a cow dog, hog dog, coon dog or whatever, you knew he had earned the title. That meant he had no major faults and could be relied on to get the job done start to finish. If you asked about a dog and they went to telling you how he did things, they were fixing to tell you about his faults. Thats the way I wish it still was.
