I talked to buddy about those, when they garmin switched from the 30 to the 40 a bunch were performing less than the thirties so this was for generation 1 of the 40s and if you get a new one you should be getting the ones with bugs worked out of them and no need to try this. Call Buddy he will gladly talk to you about this option and what I do recommend is getting one of the hard plastic covers for the collars.
