As to the Staples reference, this is one that Romney should be given lots of credit for. He invested in something that was a fairly new concept and before it was proven. That took balls.
Contrast that to Home Depot. Ross Perot was approached for a $2million investment when HD only had one store but felt they had developed a concept that was duplicable. Perot passed. That $2million would have turned out to be worth several billion.
While Bain evolved to focus on leveraged buyouts, over which he will likely receive lots of negative press, he should be given props for Staples.
