I have killed some illegal ones. I finally decided it was easier to kill em legal. It is a rush though. The tree stand is the best way though anyhow. The day I decided I would not kill anymore illegal deer I was sitting on a corn feild two weeks before bow season just across the line from kansas. (whatever you heard about kansas and big bucks is true x10)I had a bachelor group of 5 bucks come out to feed and I am not exaggerating at all when I say the smallest was one fifty or so I was using a ar-15 flat rail bull barrel on a solid rest with a scope. they were barely one hundred yards and got within fifty or so. their were two giants that would go anywhere higher than 180 B&C. there was also a nontypical with massive horns that looked like upside down oak tree trunks one had spikes on it and a drop tine at the base coming down the side of its head right against the skull in-between its eye and ear.I settled on the largest of the bucks. I believed him to be about 26 inches wide at the least  and a main frame 14 point at least. when i say nice.....I mean nice.big long tines.his mains were stacked with points that looked to be two inches apart. I had my cross hairs on his neck for a long time.I had time to put em all in the scope and inspect their racks. I almost squeezed a few times but I just couldn't do it. I don't know if it was respect for them or what but the primary thing that went through my head was, If I shoot this deer I will spend the rest of my life having to lie about it and hiding it. because a deer like this will draw attention from whomever see's it. I had never thought of that until that moment but what would happen if If I killed a state record or something and couldn't show it off or anything that would suck bad in my book. If I killed one illegal it would be an inferior deer and theres no reason, because in the crop lands along the kansas mo border they can be killed nearly every hunt from a stand legally.I guess the adrenaline is the best part of poaching but it's not worth it in the long run.
