I would say go for it if you can handle the studying.  I have a buddy that went through all the schooling at A&M.  Not excactly sure how it works but he ended up going a different route because he got all of his classes taken to be able to apply and had a very high score on his test to get in but there were people with lower scores getting in and when he asked why they told him something about they have to let in a certain percentage of white males, white females, hispanic, and other races.
