i used my ol catahoula and several of his pups on hogs and cows . they were straight up try and catch a hog but knew to bay even the youngest of cattle . and this was for the most part an inherited trait . by that i meen i didn't have to teach them not to put teeth to a young calf .
Thats a sure nuff sign of refined blooded cow dogs. I imagine it comes from a long history of the old timers culling the ones that were calf catchers.
