A started strike dog is typically a young dog that's learning the ropes I agree with you on every dog should do it on their own but every dog has to start somewhere I have yet seen a dog start out as good as a finished dog on its first few hunts ( normally it's first yr of hunting but that would do with the genetics an exposure to the woods to determine its acceleration of the qualities you are seeking in a dog ) jmo
