I just finished reading a book about training search and rescue dogs and it said to get a dog to range out further to walk at an angle away from where the dog is going to get them more comfortable with ranging away from you.  Might be worth a try if you're hunting on foot.  Haven't tried this myself yet, but I thought it was an interesting concept.

sounds like it will help...

Also, if you have the time take him to a good spot in the woods...straight from the chain or kennel to the dog box and then turn him out and ignore him for a good while...the pup might get tired of hanging around and it could possibly range out and explore...once it does this this then start moving and let the dog trail you up...do this a few times and it might help...you can't make a dog range out if it is not bred to do so...but you can encourage him to do what comes natural to him...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog...
A hunting dog is born not made...
