cooter , it sounds like your dog is still unsure of what you want from him , my catch dogs will catch any hog big or small bay dogs or not , I think your dog needs more training next to a seasoned cd , get a few hunts under his belt next to the good one , some people are fast to cull , give the dog proper guidence of what you want and let it know its alright to eat pigs up and he will more than likely come together , my bud had a catch dog that at a year old ran into the bay and sniffed the hogs asses , it almost got me in a bind a time or two being he wore the same vest mine did and was his son so they looked alike , we gave this dog a year to learn , he was a house pet from a pup also , he finally started catching and turned out to be a good one but most people would have culled this dog , dogs mature diffrently , some slow , some fast , same as people , you know dumb a$$e$ there everywhere  , well theres those in the dog world also , you just haft to figure out who is and who aint and you will be on your way to having a cd , time and tracks will tell
