Why not just lead catch dogs around untill you stumble on some hogs and then turn them loose?  Its The same reason people that bay and shoot hogs use bay dogs.  To find the hogs and bay them up.

3. those who shoot hogs......why bring the dogs?

Here's the reason....The dogs are a guarantee, a means of making the job more efficient and a greater sucess.
I can't cover 1000 acres in a morning and be sure I did'nt miss any hogs without dogs on the ground hunting.  I could maybe cover a hundred acres without dogs and be sure I did'nt miss any hogs but thats all and it would'nt cut it.  When my uncle (or any other farmer for that matter) calls and says he has hogs in his corn, I'll think "allright its gonna be 95 degress tomorow and I gotta hual hay too but I'll be there before the sun comes up and hopefully be done before it gets much above 85 degress if it ever even gets below that.  I can hual hay in the heat. So I don't have time to figure out by my self where the hogs are(thats why I use dogs), and I dont have time to mess with tied hogs and bring them out allive because usally I have something else to do after I get through hunting (Thats why I dont dont usally use catch dogs).  To me, catch dogs are a hastle, and catching hogs is more of a hastle than a challenge.  I've had catch dogs before......they don't live long, and they tend to make my Cur dogs not live as long.  My Cur dogs are a tool and hard to replace, so I intend to keep them around as long as I can so I leave the catch dogs allone.  Not that they are bad, Most of my buddies run catch dogs and If I hunt with them I'll be legging hogs but I don't prefer that method when I'm trying to tend to business.  However, I do beleive if you catch a hog you might as well tie it if circumstances allow, because why catch a hog if you just wanna kill it?  Its my dogs job to find the hogs and keep them bayed so its easy for me to walk up and shoot em.  Thats why I (and other people) shoot over bay dogs.  Does that answer you question?  Try it some time its more of a challenge than you think because the dogs actually have to have the hog bayed and they are'nt always in pleasant surroundings.
