I think you made it right. It takes some character to apologize in public, finally admitting your fault.
The easy way would have been to just fad away but you stood your ground and took it. Sounds like you have learned a good lesson and I am sure the good folks on here will be happy to forgive.

I wish more guys your age would except responsibility when the screwed up!
