sounds like there is a short somewhere and when the power ran through the switch it fried it.  Check the light it runs too.  had a lamp go bad one time and did the same thing.  If the lamp is plugged into a socket, try pluggin somethin else into it (somethin your not fond of just in case) and see what happens.
