I used to be ate up with deer hunting, but had never heard of hog dogging until a guy came to work at my job who did it. After bugging him enough, he finally took me along on a hunt. No hogs that first hunt, but it was the most fun I have had in the woods. I have had schutzhund German shepherds before, while i really enjoyed the dogs, I really didn't care for that crowd of people. In hog dogs, I saw an opportunity to have working dogs and enjoy the outdoors. I was instantly hooked. After several hunts, I got a pup off my co worker and one from one of his hunting buddies. I still have one of those dogs, and those guys have become some of my best friends. I could honestly care less to ever kill a hog. My enjoyment comes from watching the dogs work, and getting to be in the great outdoors. I never really realized how nice the country in NE Oklahoma is until i started hitting a bunch of different spots hog hunting. We walk hunt, horseback, or atv, whatever the property dictates. I prefer horseback, or actually mule back, the most. I used to count down the days until deer season began, now I count down the days until it is over as we lose a lot of our hunting properties to paying deer hunters during the season. I've only been hog hunting a little over 3 yrs now, and still consider myself greener than goose number 2 at it, but it consumes most of my thoughts and free time but I wouldn't have it any other way.
