tick born erlychia is a serious deal.  I have had probably half dozen dogs in the last 20 years get it to the point where they almost died.  Sometimes it will be mis-diagnosed as auto immune mediated anemia.  Regardless, the treatment is doxicycline and prednisone.  The dog will get a real high white blood count and become anemic.  In severe cases their gums will be white, and their abdomen can even be swollen, from an enlarged spleen.  They will get real lethargic and loss of apetite and will not have any energy.  I had a Doberman several years ago that died from it.
