If it is stones, he will likely need surgery to remove them. Prognosis is good, but he should be kept on a special diet from then on out to help keep stones/crystals from forming again. Once this happens with a dog/cat.....it is often reoccurring. This is where the special diet comes in. Science Diet has a few, K/D and U/D are a couple, for canines that have proven very effective. They're typically low protein. It'll also depend on whether he has bladder stones, or struvite stones. Struvites are most common in female dogs. What your dog has SOUNDS like bladder stones given the specifics you mentioned. It's good for dogs with this issue to drink ALOT of water, to dilute the urine and increase frequency of urination. I'd add water to his food even.
