I guess it's just personal preference. I'm not biased towards a size of a dog. A couple of the best gyps I had were about 40 lbs and they could handle about anything.  My dad kept a runt gyp that was crazy good at 35 lbs. I never seen a hog or cow escape her. He also had a big yeller dog that was 75 lbs that loved to catch bad bulls but that's about all he was good for. I don't remember hearing about the old dogs being that big and some of the old pictures I've seen they all looked pretty average like 40-50 for gyps and 50-60 for dogs. The mammy to these pups is good size about 65 lbs with a lot of leg. she goes back to a big yeller dog of my dads. My uncle Mikes old Gator dog was decent size but not huge. Another thing I've noticed is the heads on my family's dogs aren't nearly as big as some of the other family's dogs. Size dont matter too much to me, just as long as they have the desire to work. Here is a picture of my Grandaddy hog hunting back in 68 or 69 and as you can see his dogs weren't that big
