U can press charges and if he comes up with the money drop it. Letting a judge decide is as in biased as u will get. I don't like court no more than the next guy but at times that will cause far less problems than any other way.
If u go to him give him the price u think they are worth and he says ok. Well he only has a couple hundred right now but will get u more next month. Well dollar to a doughnut says u won't get another dime. The war will have begun.
Judge decides he owes X dollars. They put a lien on him. U file it with the court house and u will get ur money if he sells anything. U have to specify what u want the lean on. Beings the judge decided the amount ur hands are clean. Still gonna have trouble but will be less than other option.
Here's the thing. He shot the dogs not careing who's dogs they were. He removed the collars to hide the evidence. At that point he saw they were urs and was scared he would get caught. If it had been my name on them I would still be looking for the dead dogs and stolen collars.
